Since records of man have been kept, man has been fascinated with the need to recognize the time of day, as well as the seasons. Not until 1656 when Christian Huygens, a Dutch scientist made the first pendulum clock regulated by a mechanism with a natural period of oscillation that was accurate to within a minute per day did we have a timepiece that could be adapted for general use. He later improved the accuracy to within 10 seconds a day which was a remarkable feat for that period in time. By the late 1600’s English clock makers were making clocks based on Huygens invention and selling them to the Nobility and the very wealthy. They were imported into America along this same time period but were still too expensive for the common citizen. This clock was known as a floor clock and became a symbol of wealth and status wherever it was displayed. As time went on, manufacturing processes lowered the cost of manufacturing and it became obtainable by ordinary citizens. The moon phase mechanism was also added to the more elaborate clock model in this period. Not until Henry Clay Work wrote the song, (The Grandfathers Clock) in 1876 did the floor clock become known as the Grand Father Clock. However this type of clock that became known as (The Grandfather Clock) has always been cherished and passed down by families as a much cherished Heirloom.
